Facts on the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God
- Based on principles of self-exploration, self-empowerment, and self-liberation
- Throughout the book the main character has to learn about and deal with gender issues and racism,
- Throughout the novel, Janie Crawford, the main character, goes though a process of self-revelation and finds her identity and voice.
- The beginning of the book is centered around Janie telling her story.
- This supplemental unit to Their Eyes Were Watching God was developed as part of the project for California school kids.
Facts on Zora Neale Hurston
- She was born in Notasulga, Alabama,
- Zora Neale Hurston grew up in Florida.
- She was born on January 7, 1891
- Attended Howard University in 1923-24; Barnard College, B.A., 1928; she graduated study at Columbia University.

Zora garnered much criticism for her failure to address the subject of racism as meted out by the white American society in her portrayals of black society.

She began writing short stories in the 1920s, but her major achievements were generally between 1931 and 1943.
